Indirect Tax Specialist

Role Description

This is a full-time role for an Indirect Tax Specialist. The Indirect Tax Specialist will be responsible for managing all aspects of Value-Added Tax (VAT) for a varied portfolio of clients. This includes ensuring compliance with local and international VAT regulations, preparing and filing VAT returns, and providing expert advice on VAT matters to various internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of VAT legislation, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. It would be ideal if the candidate is also conversant with local corporate tax matters and tax refund procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

VAT Compliance and Reporting:

  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely VAT returns, ensuring adherence to all legal deadlines.
  • Reconcile VAT accounts and financial records to ensure accuracy and resolve any discrepancies.
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of all VAT-related transactions, invoices, and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor and analyze changes in VAT legislation and advise on their impact on the business.

Advisory and Planning:

  • Provide expert advice on the VAT implications of business transactions, including sales, purchases, imports, and exports.
  • Identify opportunities for VAT optimization and cost-saving measures, such as input VAT recovery.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of VAT-related policies and procedures.
  • Offer guidance on complex VAT issues, such as cross-border transactions, partial exemption, and group VAT registrations.

Audit and Risk Management:

  • Represent clients during VAT audits and investigations by tax authorities.
  • Prepare and provide all necessary documentation and support to tax auditors.
  • Conduct internal VAT compliance checks to identify and mitigate potential risks.

Internal Collaboration and Training:

  • Provide training and support to staff on VAT fundamentals and best practices.
  • Communicate complex VAT concepts clearly and concisely to non-specialists.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry-specific VAT challenges and trends.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field. A professional accounting qualification (e.g., ACCA, ACA, CIMA) or a tax qualification (e.g., CTA) is often preferred.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of local and international VAT regulations. Experience with different tax jurisdictions may be required for international companies.
