Job Summary
The Tax Officer provides day-to-day support in the delivery of tax compliance and advisory
services to client entities. The role involves preparing and reviewing tax returns, VAT filings, and
related submissions, assisting with tax computations, and ensuring compliance with both local
and international tax obligations. Working closely with the Head of Tax, accounting colleagues,
and client representatives, the Tax Officer contributes to accurate reporting, regulatory
compliance, and clear communication of tax issues.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Preparing and reviewing corporate income tax returns, VAT filings, and other tax-related
submissions for client entities. - Assisting with tax computations, deferred tax calculations, and tax provisions required for
statutory financial reporting. - Ensuring timely compliance with local tax deadlines and filing requirements.
- Supporting the documentation and compliance process for transfer pricing and
economic substance requirements. - Assisting with the preparation of tax packs, reconciliations, and supporting
documentation for statutory audits. - Monitoring statutory tax deadlines and maintaining a tax compliance calendar to ensure
timely filings and prevent penalties.
Advisory & Client Support
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of tax legislation, case law, and regulatory
developments, and advising clients and internal teams on the potential impact of
changes. - Assisting in the preparation of reports, memos, and presentations to communicate tax
issues clearly and effectively to clients and management. - Supporting the onboarding of new clients from a tax perspective, including assistance
with KYC/AML requirements, tax registrations, and initial compliance checks. - Responding to client vat and tax queries in a timely and professional manner, ensuring
- clear communication and practical guidance.
- Working closely with the accounting team and other departments to deliver integrated
and practical solutions to clients.
Regulatory & Authority Liaison
Liaising with tax authorities on queries, audits, and assessments.
Supporting the Head of Tax in preparing responses to regulatory inspections or requests.
Team & Organisational Support
- Providing consistent support to the Head of Tax and other senior team members in
delivering high-quality client services. - Contributing to process improvements and knowledge-sharing within the tax team.
- Assisting in drafting and maintaining internal tax policies, checklists, and working papers
to support consistency and efficiency within the tax function. - Assisting with any other matters as may be requested from time to time by management.
Continuous Professional Development & Industry Awareness
- Staying informed of changes in Maltese corporate tax law, VAT rules, and international tax
developments (e.g., OECD BEPS, CRS, FATCA, Pillar 2). - Participating in ongoing training, CPD, and professional development activities to
enhance technical knowledge and skills. - Actively pursuing or continuing professional qualifications.
- Sharing updates, insights, and best practices with colleagues to support team
development and collective expertise. - Attending relevant seminars, webinars, or workshops to broaden understanding of
emerging tax trends and regulatory updates.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, Taxation, Law, or related discipline (part-qualified
- professionals or individuals pursuing ACCA, ADIT, or equivalent qualifications.
- MIT award in Taxation
- Prior experience in tax compliance, accounting, or a related role within a professional
services or financial services environment. - Knowledge of Maltese corporate tax, VAT legislation, and international tax frameworks.
- Familiarity with transfer pricing and economic substance requirements is an advantage.
